Lepekhin I.I., (1740-1802), traveller, naturalist

LEPEKHIN Ivan Ivanovich (1740 - 1802, St. Petersburg), naturalist, traveller, Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1768). Studies at the Academic University (1760-62), continuing on at the University of Strasbourg (1762-67). From 1768 to 1774, he conducted the Academy of Sciences' expeditions to the Volga region, the Urals, and the North-Eastern part of Russia, closest to Europe. In 1774-1802, he directed the Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences, meanwhile, from 1777 to 1794, holding the post of Inspector at the Academic Gymnasia. In 1783, Lepekhin became the Permanent Secretary of the Russian Academy. He left behind written works on agriculture, veterinary medicine, and ichthyology. Lepekhin was buried at the Volkovskoe Cemetery.
