KOTELNIKOV Gleb Evgenievich (1872, St. Petersburg - 1944), inventor. After graduating from the Kiev Military School in 1894, he served in the military for three years, shifting to civil services in 1897. Upon his return to St. Petersburg in 1910, he was accepted as an actor at the People's House theater company. Deeply moved by the death of pilot L.M. Matsievich, in 1911 he invented the first aircraft backpack parachute in Russia; the parachute was successfully tested near Gatchina in 1912. In the 1920s, Kotelnikov worked out a number of new parachute models. In 1941 he was evacuated from Leningrad. A memorial plaque was set up at 31-33 Fourteenth Line of Vasilievsky Island, where he lived from 1912 to 1941. His name was given to an alley near the former Komendantsky Aerodrome, and to a village, Kotelnikovo, formerly Salyuzi, where the first parachute model was tested in 1912.
