KALESNIK Stanislav Vikentievich (1901, St. Petersburg - 1977, Leningrad), geographer, Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968). Graduated from the Leningrad State University (1929), of which he became a professor in 1939. In 1929-31, he lectured at the Leningrad Mining Institute. In 1955-77, he headed the laboratory and appointed director of the Scientific Research Institute (NII) of Limnology of the Academy of Sciences. Served as the President of the Geographical Society of the USSR (1964-77), and Vice-President of the International Geographical Union (1968-72). Authored over 400 theoretical scientific papers about physical geography, glaciology and landscape science. An explorer of Central Asia and the glacial regions of the USSR. From 1932, he lived at 4 Pesochnaya Street (today Professora Popova Street). Buried at the Komarovskoe Cemetery.
