DAL Vladimir Ivanovich (1801-1872), writer, ethnographer, lexicographer, doctor, Corresponding Member of Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1838). He graduated from the Naval Military School (1819) and from the Faculty of Medicine of Derpt University (1829). In 1831-32 he was a doctor of the Petersburg Military Army Hospital. In this period he published Russian fairy-tales which he had adapted under the pen name of Kazak Lugansky and went into retirement. In 1833-41 he served in Orenburg as an official of special commissions, during one of his visits to St. Petersburg in 1837 he was with the dying Alexander Pushkin, who was his friend; later Dal wrote detailed notes about those days. In 1841-49 he lived in St. Petersburg (Alexandrinsky Theatre Square, now 11 Ostrovsky Square, memorial plaque), occupying the position of the head of the special office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs; on Thursdays literary men, scientists and public figures gathered in his house. Dal was one of the founders and members of the Russian Geographical Society (1845), whose first sitting took place in Dal"s flat. In 1849-59 he served in Nizhny Novgorod, later in Moscow where he accomplished the main work of his life - compiling of the Concise Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language (in 4 volumes, 1863-66), for which he was awarded the Lomonosov Prize of the Academy of Sciences and title of the Honourable Academician (1863). Dal Street on Aptekarsky Island was named after him in 1913.
