BERKOV Pavel Naumovich (1896-1969, Leningrad), historian of literature, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1960). Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of the Vienna University in 1923. Lived in Leningrad from 1925, worked at the Scientific Research Institute (NII) for Comparative Studies of the Languages and Literature of the West and East, which operated under auspices of the Leningrad State University; and at the Institute of Books, Documents and Writing. In 1936, he attained professorship at the Leningrad State University. From 1936, he also worked at the Institute of Russian Literature, heading the Institute of Russian Literature's 18th Century Russian Literature Studies Group from 1955. In 1938, he was arrested under false charges, and released in 1939. Berkov's most important works are devoted to the history of Russian Literature of the 19-20th centuries, and a history of 18th century journalism, bibliology and bibliography. In the 1930s, he lived at 1 Glinka Street. Buried at the Komarovskoe Cemetery.
