BARTOLD Vasily Vladimirovich (1869, St. Petersburg - 1930, Leningrad), orientalist, Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1913). Graduated from the Oriental Languages Faculty of Petersburg University in 1891, lectured there and at other educational establishments from 1896, attaining professorship at Petersburg University in 1901. Worked as a researcher for the Art History Institute (1918-27) and the State Hermitage (1921-28), and as Vice-Chairman of the State Academy of the History of Material Culture (1926-1929). Wrote books on history, languages, written languages of the peoples of Middle and Central Asia, Islam, and a history of oriental studies. In the 1920s, he lived at 5 Universitetskaya Embankment. Buried at the Smolenskoe Lutheran Cemetery.
