ANICHKOV Nikolay Nikolaevich (1885, St. Petersburg - 1964, Leningrad), pathologist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939) and Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944), Distinguished Worker of Science (1935). He graduated from the Military Medical Academy (1909) and was a professor there from 1920 to 1939; in 1939-46 he was a head of the chair of Pathological Physiology (memorial plaque). In the 1920s he worked in the Institute of Surgical Neuropathology (now the Institute of Neurosurgery); he was a head of the department of Anatomical Pathology of the Institute of Experimental Medicine (1920-64); served as president of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1946-53). Anichkov created the cholesterol model of atherosclerosis. He was awarded the Stalin Prize (1942). He was repeatedly elected the president of the Leningrad Society of Pathologists. Anichkov was buried in Bogoslovskoe Cemetery.
