ALEXEEV Vasily Mikhailovich (1881, St. Petersburg - 1951, Leningrad), orientalist, sinologist, Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929). Graduated from the Oriental Languages Faculty of Petersburg University in 1902, lecturing there from 1910, achieving professorship in 1918, and chairing the department in 1944-50. From 1913, he concurrently worked at the Asian Museum at the Oriental Studies Institute of the Academy of Sciences, heading its China Studies from 1930. From 1926, Alexeev worked at the Academy of the History of Material Culture (GAIMK, IIMK). Taught Chinese language at both civil and military branches of the Leningrad Institutions of Higher Education. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of Chinese history and philology, translated Chinese literature, he wrote more than 450 academic papers. A member of many Russian and foreign scientific societies, and a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR (1947). In 1939-51, he lived in the House of Academics at 2/1 Leitenanta Schmidta Embankment (memorial plaque installed). Buried at the Shuvalovskoe Cemetery.
