STEKLOV MATHEMATICAL INSTITUTE of the Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg Branch, situated at 27 Fontanka River Embankment. It originates from the Institute of Physics and Mathematics founded by V. A. Steklov in 1921. The institute moved to Moscow in 1940 with a branch remaining in Leningrad, which received its present-day name in 1991. The institute conducts basic research into theoretical mathematics and mathematic modelling of theoretical physics such as mathematical logic, theory of algorithms, algebra, number theory, geometry, topology, mathematical analysis, probability theory, mathematical statistics, continuum mechanics, quantum physics, geophysics, and seismology. A number of members of the academy worked at the institute at various times including A. D. Alexandrov, O. A. Ladyzhenskaya, Y. V. Linnik, and A. A. Markov. In 1996, the Euler International Mathematical Institute became part of the institute, which was established in 1988 on the initiative of L. D. Faddeev, the director of Steklov Mathematical Institute and a member of the academy. The institute has been publishing its preprints and Notes from Scientific Seminars since 1966.
