ST MICHAEL’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, located at 32/18a Sredny Avenue, Vasilievsky Island. An architectural monument. Commissioned by the German Lutheran community of St. Petersburg, the church was constructed in 1871-76 according to the design of military engineer K. K. Bulmering. The building is designed in the Neo-Gothic style, the main facade is emphasized with a tall belfry; the hall is divided into naves with two rows of cast-iron plastered columns (the Church accommodated 800 people). The pulpit and the utensils were donated by senior parishioner and factory-owner Y. Pal. In 1886, the facade was redesigned (architect R. B. Bernhard). In 1909, the congregation numbered 2,000 people. The church oversaw an almshouse and two orphanages. In the late 1920s, the church was given over to the Catholic community and in the mid 1930s was closed and reconstructed. Following the Great Patriotic War the building served as industrial premises of “Sport”. In 1992, a part of the building was transferred to the community of Evangelic Christian Baptists.
