SAMOKHVALOV Alexander Nikolaevich (1894-1971, Leningrad), painter, graphic artist, theatre artist, sculptor. Studied at the Architecture Department of the Academy of Arts (1914-18) under V.A. Belyaev and G.R. Zaleman, and at the Painting Faculty of the Academy of Arts (1919-23) under K.S. Petrov-Vodkin, D.N. Kardovsky, and A.A. Rylov. In the 1920-30s he produced paintings with the themes of labour and sport, creating a romantic image of contemporary times: Girl in a T-shirt (1932, the State Russian Museum), a series of watercolours titled Metrostroy Women (1934, the State Russian Museum), and the panel Soviet Physical Education for the USSR's pavilion at the International exhibition in Paris (1937, Grand Prix). He participated in the restoration of St. George's Cathedral in the Old Ladoga (1926), contributed illustrations for the book A Story of a Town by M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin (1935), and worked as a set-designer for The Dowerless Bride by A.N. Ostrovsky for the Bolshoy Drama Theatre (1935). He was a member of The Artists' Cycle Society, and wrote a memoir called My Creative Development (1977). He lived at 8 Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island, and was buried at Komarovskoe cemetery.
