BARANOV Nikolay Varfolomeevich (1909-1989), architect, National architect of the USSR (1972), the full member of the Academy of Fine Arts of the USSR (1979). He graduated from the College of Hydraulic Engineers (1931) and from the Academy of Fine Arts (1934). In 1938-51, he was the Chief Architect of Leningrad. In the years of the war and the siege, Baranov dedicated his time to city defence issues. His main works (with a team of authors) are: projects of the General plans of the development of Leningrad (1935-40, 1945-48 addressing the issues of the access to the sea; see The General plans of development of St. Petersburg - Leningrad), the ensemble of Lenin Square and the new terminal of Finlyandsky Railway Station (1943-1960). He was one of the authors of post-war restoration of architectural monuments. He is the author of the reconstruction projects of Arts Square and Revolution Square, of the development of the seaside zone of Vasilievsky Island (1943-66), the commons park, a number of important public buildings (including the V. I. Lenin Sports and Concert complex for 25,000; 1980), etc. In 1956-61, he was the Vice President and the Secretary of the Academy of Architecture and Urban Planning of the USSR; in 1963-81, he was the Deputy Chief of the Committee of Civil Engineering and Architecture governed by the State Construction Inspection of the USSR. He is the author of a number of books on urban planning and architecture. He is the recipient of the State Award of the USSR (1979). He resided at 5 Field of Mars.
