Kazansky Bridge

KAZANSKY BRIDGE (in 1766-1830 Rozhdestvensky Bridge, in 1923-44 Plekhanova Bridge), over Griboedova Canal, on Nevsky Prospect by Kazan Cathedral (hence the name). It was built in 1765-66 (engineer V. I. Nazimov, I. М. Golenishchev-Kutuzov) at the site of a wooden bridge, which existed here in 1716. The span is bridged by a brick arch with limestone slabs, the facade arches are made of granite, and the rubble stone piers are faced with granite. In 1805-06, while the bridge was undergoing extensions (architect L. Rusca) the "diamond" boss of the facade, the stairway access to the water was destroyed; the wrought iron railing was replaced with granite parapets. In 1999-2002, the vault was restored in its 53 meter-long section, waterproofing was provided. Length: 18.8 metres, width: 95 metres.
