PALACES FOR WEDDINGS AND BIRTH REGISTRATION. The first wedding palace in Russia was opened in Leningrad in 1961, with the purpose of giving a more ceremonial and festival character to the formal and official procedure of registering "changes in civil position". It was located at the former P.P. Derviz Mansion (later the mansion belonged to Grand Prince Andrey Vladimirovich) at 28 Krasnogo Flota Embankment (now Angliiskaya Embankment), built in the first half of the 18th century (rebuilt in 1889-90s in the Historical style by architect A.F. Krasovsky). The second wedding palace was opened in 1963 at 52 Petra Lavrova Street (now, Furstadtskaya Street), in the former K.A. Vargunin Mansion (1896-1899, architect A.I. von Gogen), designed in the style of late Eclecticism. From 1968, the adjacent building, which was the former N.V. Spiridonov Mansion (1895-96, architects A.N. Pomerantsev, V.F. Svinyin), housed the Malyutka (New-Born) Palace, where parents of newborn children were awarded medals professing their child's birth on the banks of the Neva River. Pronouncement of marriage and registration of newborns held in such beautiful interiors with ceremonial elements contributed to the consistent popularity of these institutions. Some of the district offices for the registration of changes in civil position were also housed in architectural monuments, such as the main building at the E.R. Dashkova Kiryanovo Estate (1783-1784, architect G. Quarenghi) and in the A.A. Ekarev Mansion on 41 Suvorovsky Avenue (1891, architect A.S. Lytkin).
