MANSION OF YUSUPOVA (42 Liteiny Avenue), an architectural monument, constructed in 1852-1858 (architect L.L. Bonstedt, partly used the original project of architect G.A. Bosse) for countess Z.I. Yusupova. A monumental two-storey building is executed to the forms of the Italian high Renaissance with the use of some Baroque elements. The facades are faced with Bremen sandstone, the sculptural decor was executed in the workshops of A. Triscorni. In the interior artificial marble, moulding, gilding and decorative painting (modeller T.P. Dylev, painters I.A. Maykov and K.I. Paul) were extensively used. From 1908, the building was rented by the Petersburg artistic club, in 1908-10 there was the theatre Krivoe Zerkalo (Distorting Mirror), in 1909 an exhibition dedicated to Leo Tolstoy was arranged, in 1912 - the exhibition 100 Years of French Painting (was organised by the editor of the Apollo magazine). In the years of the First World War in the house a hospital was arranged, in the 1930s - it was a house of political education, since 1949 - the central lecture-hall of Knowledge Society.
