NEVSKIE GATE, in Nevsky curtain of the Peter and Paul Fortress. It was constructed in 1703, rebuilt in stone in 1747-48. The architectural decor of the facade from the side of the Neva River was done in 1787 (architect N.A. Lvov) in Neoclassical style, with double columns, supporting the pediment above the arch. The wooden Nevsky wharf in front of the Nevskie Gate was rebuilt in stone (engineer R.T. Tomilov) in 1777. In the 1860s, the wharf was named Komendantsky (Commandant), while it was from here that the commandant's boat departed. Under the vault of the arch the pit was pebbled at the original level of the Zayachy (Hare) Island, above are marked the levels of the floods of 1752, 1777, 1788, 1824, 1924 and 1975. The northern facade of the Nevskie Gate was restored in 1998-1999, to resemble the gate of the middle of the 18th century.
