Gascoigne Charles (1739-1806), manager of Izhorsky Plants

GASCOIGNE Karl Karlovich (Charles) (1739-1806), mechanical engineer, inventor, Actual Civil Counsellor. A native of Scotland, he graduated with a degree in engineering and was a founding member of Carron Metallurgy Company in 1760 and director of the Company from 1769, where he invented the carronade and a short-barrelled naval gun. Invited by Admiral S. K. Greig, he came to Kronstadt in May 1786. Gascoigne was appointed director of Alexandrovsky Gun Works and Konchezersky Iron Foundry in Olonets District in September of the same year to arrange large-scale production of artillery weapons and ammunition for the navy and the army, steam engines, etc. He was in charge of building an iron foundry in Kronstadt (today known as Kirov Plant) in 1789, which was relocated to St. Petersburg in 1801. He was also at the head of the so-called Bank Mint in 1799-1801 and Alexandrovsky Manufactory in St. Petersburg in 1805-06 and simultaneously served as director of Izhorsky Plants from August 1803 where he designed the reconstruction plan, and headed, together with architect V. I. Hastie, the construction of workshops and dams on the Izhora River. Gascoigne also taught metal casting to Russian workers. In St. Petersburg he lived in Ekateringofsky Avenue (today 22 Rimsky-Korsakov Avenue), his house was later rebuilt.
