VARSHAVSKY RAILWAY STATION (located at 188 Obvodny Canal Embankment), was built in 1853 by architect K.A. Skarzhinsky. Traffic on the first section of the railway 44.6 km long, between St. Petersburg and the imperial residence in Gatchina was opened in November 1853. In 1859 the railway was extended to Pskov, and in 1862 to Warsaw. A separate spur was laid to the Prussian border in Verzhbolovo, connecting St. Petersburg with many European capitals. Architect P.O. Salmanovich built a new building of Varshavsky Railway Station and two stone houses for personnel in 1855-60 (one of the buildings survives to present day). Architects N.P. Vysotsky, A.R. Geschwend, F.I. Schuster and others participated in the construction of the railway station complex, which included a storehouse, car sheds, workshops, etc. During the reconstruction of Varshavsky Railway Station in 1949 a monument to Lenin (sculptor N.V. Tomsky, architects N.F. Khomutetsky, B.V. Muravyev) was installed in a niche of the main facade. International trains departing from Varshavsky Railway Station connected Leningrad with Warsaw, Berlin, Budapest, Prague, Paris, and Sofia. In 2001, the Museum of Railway Equipment was opened near Varshavsky Railway Station storage tracks. The long distance train was moved to Vitebsky Railway Station, while suburban electric trains were moved to Baltiysky Railway Station. Since December 2002 trains to Ivangorod, Kingisepp and Gdov depart from Varshavsky Railway Station. There is Baltiyskaya metro station near Varshavsky Railway Station. Varshavsky Railway Station gives the name to the neighbouring passage and bridge over Obvodny Canal.
