PARGOLOVO, a former settlement; since 1997, a municipal unit along the Vyborgskoe Highway, in the Vyborgsлy District of Saint Petersburg; also, a train station. As of 2002, the population count was approximately 4,000 people. Pargolovo is one of the oldest settlements in the northern part of the Neva Lowland, and has been known since the 15th century. In the 18th century, several villages sprang up on the territory (Suzdalsky Settlement, Starozhilovka, Kabalovka, Zamanilovka), which were inhabited by settlers from central and northern Russia. In the 19th century, Pargolovo was a holiday resort favourite for Petersburg intelligentsia. Countess Bobrinskaya's summer cottage welcomed A. S. Pushkin; critic V. V. Stasov spent his vacation in the village of Starozhilovka, and was visited by composers А. K. Glazunov and N. А. Rimsky-Korsakov, painter V. V. Vereshchagin, singer F. I. Chaliapin and others. In 1875, Uspenskoe Cemetery was opened 1,5 kilometres west of Pargolovo (today the Severnoe Cemetery, one of Saint Petersburg's largest). In 1938, Pargolovo became an urban settlement, mostly because of an integrated industrial complex called Pargolovsky, and a workers' settlement which emerged in the vicinity of the railway station. In 1960-70, the Prigorodny state farm residential settlement appeared. Southwest of Pargolovo is the Shuvalov Counts' former estate, with a park (see Shuvalovsky Park), artificial Parnas Mountain, a palace, and other architectural structures.
