SMOLENSKOE VILLAGE, a historical region on the left bank of the Neva River, on the territory of Nevskaya Zastava, between Bolshoy Smolensky Avenue and Krupskoy Street. In the north, it bordered with Steklyanny (Glass) Settlement, in the south - with Archangel Michael village. The settlement appeared in the early 18th century, after Shlisselburgsky track was built, and was populated with coachmen, transferred from Smolenskaya Province (hence the name). It remained an underdeveloped outskirt populated mainly with workers until the 1920s. In 1927-32, Palevsky and Tekstilshchik residential areas were constructed. In the 1950s-60s, the development and building up of the territory were complete, new streets were constructed and old ones were straightened. In 1970, Elizarovskaya metro station was opened. The place name has been preserved in the name of Bolshoy Smolensky Avenue.
