OZERKI, a locality in the northern part of Saint Petersburg, neighbouring Shuvalovo on the north, the Novo-Orlovsky forest park on the northwest, the Udelnaya metro station on the south, and Kolomyagi on the southwest. Its name comes from the presence of two lakes (in Russian, "ozero") including Verkhnee (Upper) Suzdalskoe Lake and Srednee (Middle) Suzdalskoe Lake. After the Saint-Petersburg - Vyborg - Ozerki railway was laid in 1870, Ozerki grew into a popular summer cottage area. In the early 20th century, Ozerki was a favourite summer retreat for the Petersburg beau-monde with its restaurants and its summer theatre. A. A. Blok's poem Unknown Woman was composed under the romantic flair of Ozerki's ambience. In 1930, the southern part of Ozerki was incorporated into the Leningrad Region, and in 1963 the entire territory. Present-day Ozerki has preserved the original street layout and private residential areas. Due to a steep landscape with pine covered lake banks and sand beaches, which are quite atypical for Saint Petersburg, the area offers great variety in terms of recreational activities. Ozerki accommodates the Petersburg Mansion Agricultural-Environmental Centre, and the Youth of Russia Children's Athletics Olympic Reserve Sports School. Visitors can also enjoy the Holy Trinity Church, which has survived into the present day (1904, architect А. S. Tikhanov, 27 Bolshaya Ozernaya Street). The locality's name has been given to a railway station, Ozerkovsky Avenue, Bolshaya Ozernaya Street and Malaya Ozernaya Street, First Ozerkovy Lane and Third Ozerkovy Lane, and the Ozerki metro station.
