STARAYA DEREVNYA, a historical district in the north-west of St. Petersburg, on the right bank of the Bolshaya Nevka River (opposite Elagin Island), to the west of Novaya Derevnya. In the 18th century, chancellor A. P. Bestuzhev-Ryumin’s serfs were settled in this district to do trench work on Kamenny Island. While a new settlement on Chernaya Rechka River got the name Novaya Derevnya (New Village), the first settlement was respectively called Staraya Derevnya (Old Village). In 1894, the Primorskaya railway line to Sestroretsk was built along the north border of Staraya Derevnya. At the beginning of the 20th century, the saw-mill of Gonzkiewicz (today Sevzapmebel Furniture Works), Semenov's factories producing joinery and boxes and other enterprises were opened in the south-east part of Staraya Derevnya. In 1909-15, a Buddhist temple with residential houses and a garden appeared. Until 1917, Staraya Derevnya formed a part of the Novo-Derevensky suburban lot; in 1917, it was included within city limits. During the Siege of 1941-44, all wooden constructions were either destroyed or demolished to get firewood. In the 1960-70s, the territory was mainly built up with industrial objects and service facilities. In 1978, the building of Primorsky District Administration was erected (83 Savushkina Street). In the early 1990s, high-rise buildings of bearing-wall construction occupied the territory at 107-115 Savushkina Street. The toponym has been preserved in the names of Staroderevenskaya Street and Staraya Derevnya metro station.
