RYBATSKOE, an area to the south-east of St. Petersburg, on the left bank of the Neva River, between the Murzinka River and the Slavyanka River. In 1716, Rybnaya (Fish) settlement was founded there at the Peter the Great’s decree. Its residents (mainly immigrants from the Oka River) were engaged in farming and fishing, supplying the city with fish. In 1788, local residents established a voluntary naval unit that took part in the war against Sweden. To commemorate this, a granite obelisk was erected at Empress Catherine II’s decree on the bank of the Neva River. In 1829, the settlement was renamed Rybatskaya (Fishermen's) and assigned as a part of Shlisselburg region. By the late 19th century, Rybatskoe became one of the largest suburban villages on Shlisselburgsky road (in 1897, there were over 3,000 dwellers and 600 houses). In the early 1900s, a suburban steam railway was constructed that bound the settlement and the centre of St. Petersburg. The majority of Rybatskoe residents worked at plants and factories of Nevskaya Zastava. In 1906, a railway line to Vologda was built through Rybatskoe and a large station for freight operation was constructed. In the 1950s, plants producing metallic structures and reinforced concrete items were founded in the east part by Slavyanka River. In the 1970-80s, the industrial zone to the south of the railway line as developed. There are plants producing electrical devices and aluminum constructions, Nevskoe metro depot, Rybatskoe metro station (the terminal station of the third metro line, located by the railway platform of the same name). In 1986, the total reconstruction of Rybatskoe was launched: by the early 1990s, old buildings had been replaced with apartment houses for 50,000 people and the region planning had been changed completely. The preserved Kazanskoe Cemetery stands out against the backdrop of new buildings.
