ALEXANDROVSKY PARADE GROUND, the historical name of the territory in the south-west of the city center, around the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, north of Obvodnoy Canal and west of the Monastyrka River. From the early 19th century, Alexandrovsky Parade Ground served as drill grounds for the Cossack Life Guard Regiment stationed at 22-33 Obvodnoy Canal Embankment (1840s, architect I. D. Chernik). In 1851, over the course of the construction of the Petersburg - Moscow railway, the west side of the Alexandrovsky Parade Ground gave way to railway lines and depots. Following S. P. Botkin"s initiative, the Alexandrovskaya Barracks Hospital for Infectious Diseases was opened with 300 beds in 1882 in the west part of the Alexander Parade Ground (today the Botkin Hospital for Infectious Diseases). Industrial and storage facilities were built on the territory in the late 19th - early 20th centuries, which was also when Kremenchugskaya, Mirgorodskaya, Konstantinogradskaya and other streets were laid out. Much of the territory"s north section was occupied by the Niolaevskaya Railway"s freight depot. The City Railway (Tram) Central Electric Power Station was constructed on the Monastyrka River Embankment in 1908, the same year as a transit and women"s prison.
