ADMIRALTEYSKAYA SIDE, a historical name of the central part of St. Petersburg bound on the north by the Neva river and on the south by the Moika River. Formed in the early 18th century when the General Admiralty, Admiralty Shipyard and Admiralty Fortress were built on the B. Neva River bank. The territory of Admiralteyskaya Side encompasses major landmarks, architectural monuments, and important complexes, among them the Palace Square and the Winter Palace, St. Isaac's Square, Dekabristov Square with the Bronze Horseman monument, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Field of Mars, the Marble Palace, Truda Square, and New Holland. Until 1917, Admiralteyskaya Side was a separate administrative and territorial unit known as the Admiralteyskaya Part.
