Podzorny Island

Categories / City Topography/Geographical Objects/Islands

PODZORNY ISLAND (Observation Island) is a defunct island that was situated at the mouth of the Fontanka River and was about two hectares in area. It was named after the Observation House situated on the island in the early 18th century, which overlooked the main ship channel between the Bolshaya Neva River and the Gulf of Finland. The embankment erected on the east bank in the mid-19th century was washed by Podzorny Canal. There was a settlement of pilots on the island until the early 20th century (hence another name - Lotsmansky Island translated as the Island of Pilots). Lotsmansky Canal was filled up in the mid-20th century. The area of the former Podzorny Island is now occupied by docks of Admiralteyskie Verfi Company.
