Categories / City Topography/Waterways and Currents/Canals

SHKIPERSKY CANAL, built in the 1720s in the west part of Vasilivsky Island, it was named after skippers' settlement that once existed on this site. The canal joins Galley Harbour and Nevsky Bay (reserved for ship navigation). The length is 450 metres; the width is approximately 30 metres. Close to the scoop of the Galley Harbour, Shkipersky Bridge was constructed across Shkipersky Canal (on Shkipersky Protok Street). Today, it is used for sports purposes and as a recreational zone.
